Robert Lewis was born among the Inuit in Hay River, a village on the shore of Great Slave Lake in Canada’s North West Territories, where his parents were teaching school.
His family left the North when he was a year old, and he lived in Kitchener, Ontario, until the age of nineteen. He has never been back to Hay River. |

In 1994 he moved to Montreal, Quebec, following five years in British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, where he studied at the University of Victoria. In 2004 he published Gaj: The End of Religion, his first book. He has recently completed the documentary film Be Smile: The Stories of Two Urban Inuit, about two Inuit men living on the streets of Montreal in the aftermath of cultural genocide. |
